About Us

Hui Makaʻāinana o Makana (Hui)

A community 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed by lineal descendants of Hāʻena.

The Hui is dedicated to perpetuating and teaching the skills, knowledge, and practices of our kūpuna (ancestors) through the interpretation, restoration, care and protection of the natural and cultural resources that are located within the Hāʻena State Park.

Through an agreement with Hawaii State Parks, the Hui manages Hāʻena State Park access in keeping with the park’s Master Plan.  Hui volunteers are restoring about 15 acres in the Park which include:

  • Loʻi Restoration
  • Poi Mill Restoration
  • Maintenance of family historical grave sites
  • Maintenance of 2 historical house sites

Proceeds from access fees now support farm management and youth programming.  In the near future, the Hui will work with state park staff and access partner THI (below) to develop park signage to better inform visitors about the park’s significant cultural resources and history.  Find more at huimakaainanaomakana.org.

The Hanalei Initiative (THI)

The Hui has partnered with the Hanalei Initiative to manage and operate the Hāʻena State Park access system.

The Hanalei Initiative (THI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in 2018 to address challenges confronting Kauai’s north shore community.
